Why I am passionate about Better Beauty

During my second pregnancy, I was introduced to a beauty brand that is counterrevolutionary to the industry. I started to educate myself on the products and ingredients we are using in our personal care products and became angry at the amount of information that I learned regarding our chemical exposure and the link to health issues. Before I knew it, this new passion of mine actually started to become a profitable business. Sharing this information has become my mission and I am honored to be able to create a life I love by informing my community about environmental health and safety in the personal care products industry.

WE DESERVE BETTER

I care about the health and well being of all women, but somehow my community of women of color have a disadvantage when it comes to safer products. Fewer than 25% of products marketed to women of color are considered safe by the Environmental Working Group safety rating. I believe that women of color deserve safer choices for beauty products too. Just because our some of us wear our hair  “natural” does not mean that the products you use are safe for your health. If you are “natural” and don’t know what is in your make up, gel nails, body wash, and deodorant, we need to talk.

I love educating MY community even though half the time, we don’t want to hear it. Toxic lipstick and perfect brows will be not cute in 20, 30 years when doctors are cutting out our uterus or administering chemo.

The last time the us passed a law regulating the personal care products industry was 1938. That means they can put poison in your lotion, body wash, deodorant and makeup and not tell you. They don’t have to tell you there are hormone disruptors and carcinogens in your shampoo. If you get nothing else from this blog post, I encourage you to avoid products that have “fragrance” listed in them and download the Environmental Working Group “think dirty app” and check your products!

I care about the health of my community..and I want us to make safer choices…we deserve it.

VOICE FOR CHANGE

I never thought of myself as a leader or anyone who could help people. I’m trained a graphic designer and spend the majority of my time in solitude. Working with Beautycounter has changed me in so many wonderful ways and given me the confidence to try new things. Encouraging others and pouring into others was the most pleasant surprise of all. I jump out of bed each day with excitement to do this. When we know better, we do better. I have to use my voice for change.

Tell me what will you use your voice for?

I am so glad I took the job with Beautycounter and never looked back. I work my Beautycounter business around my full-time freelance job designing brand identities and building websites for small business owners and I love having something that does so much good and is financially rewarding. The free trips to Santa Barbara and fabulous product are cherries on top! I love the skin I am in and my confidence is through the roof. I get to work with some of the kindest, hard-working and passionate women in the world. What could be better?

I’ve met so many creative and passionate women on this journey that I am so grateful to call friends and I would love to meet you and hear your story.
